It’s Blog Action Day!

The blogosphere has been abuzz today about Blog Action Day – an effort organized by an enterprising group of bloggers to get people around the world all talking about a single issue: the environment. And with over 15,000 blogs and several major companies/NGOs on board, one could say that it’s already been an unqualified success (this writer wasn’t able to go through a single blog today that didn’t at least have one entry tackling this du jour topic).
Al Gore’s winning of the Nobel Peace prize this past Friday certainly didn’t hurt the bloggers’ efforts to raise awareness of this weighty issue. For bloggers like me, who deal with stories related to the environment on a daily basis, one could argue that Blog Action Day didn’t really make much of a difference. That, of course, would be wrong: the real value of today has been seeing bloggers from across the spectrum – those writing about finance and fashion as much as envirobloggers – unite in a common message of hope and commitment. And isn’t that worth the effort in itself?
